Sumeet NAIR

Principal, Delhi Fashion Week, India

Sumeet Nair is the principal of Delhi Fashion Week and is one of the founding members of the Fashion Foundation of India, India’s apex body for the fashion. He is one of the very few fashion experts in India who brings with him over fifteen years of experience and expertise in the industry. Sumeet completed his formal education in Economics from Stanford University in 1991 after which he came back to India and set up his own business enterprise. He successfully ran Black Eye Design, an apparel and home furnishings company for a decade. The company had clients such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Nicole Miller, and Nicole Farhi among others. In India, on his return, he focused on the fashion, and understood the needs of the industry through the country’s early designers. At that time, there was an urgent need to bring designers under the fold of an organization to help grow the industry. Sumeet Nair, along with a group of designers, laid the foundation of the Fashion Design Council of India to help further the interests of the industry. Sumeet Nair was appointed its first Executive Director after its formation in 1998. In 1999, he wrote the plan for the first Fashion Week in India, and helped execute it in 2000. Sumeet was the longest serving Board member of Fashion Design Council of India since its inception. Under him, two of the most important studies done on Indian fashion were commissioned, which are till date, the only comprehensive studies done on Indian designers and the fashion industry. In 2007, the Board of FDCI urged him to return as the Executive Director to help turn around the fashion weeks. He executed two successful editions of India Fashion Week for Spring Summer 2008 and Autumn Winter 2008 and set the direction for Indian fashion to begin it global journey.
