Luca CORDERO DI MONTEZEMOLO

Chairman, Alitalia

Born in Bologna in 1947

 

Mr. Montezemolo is President of Alitalia, Vice President of Unicredit, Chairman of the Promoting Committee for the Rome Candidacy at the 2024 Olympic Games and Chairman of Telethon, one of the main Italian charities that aims to fund research on muscular dystrophies and genetic diseases.

 

He is Honorary Chairman, board member and controlling shareholder of Montezemolo & Partners SGR Spa, a promoting and managing vehicle of  Private Equity Funds.

 

He is also one of the founder and main shareholders of NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori), first Italian private high-speed railway company where he has served as President until 2012.

 

He serves as a member of the board of directors of the luxury French Group KERING, Tod’s S.p.A., NTV S.p.A.,Poltrona Frau and Coesia Spa.

 

He has been Chairman of Ferrari S.p.A. since 1991 to 2014

Between 1973 and 1977, he worked as Assistant to Enzo Ferrari and Team Manager of the Maranello racing team, winning two Formula 1 world driver’s championships in 1975 and 1977. Between 1977 and 1983 he passed to work for the Fiat Group, before as Senior Vice President of External Relations and later as Chief Executive Officer of the holding company for all Fiat Group publishing activities.

In the 1984  he was Chief Executive Officer of Cinzano International S.p.A. in Geneve.

From 1986 to 1990 he was General Director of the Organizing Committee of the 1990 Italian World Cup Football Championship.

In the 1991 he went back to Ferrari as Chairman and CEO and he lead the company to the highest levels in the design, in the industrial production and in the competitions. As Sporting Director and as Chairman he won 19 World Drivers and Constructors Championship

 

He served as Chairman of Fiat S.p.A. from 2004 to 2010 and as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Maserati S.p.A. from 1997 to 2005

He was President of Confindustria from 2004 to 2008 and President of LUISS University until 2010

He also served as President of FIEG (Federazione Italiana Editori Giornali)  and as  President of the Bologna International Trade Fair.

 

He was awarded five honorary degrees: in Mechanical Engineering by the University of Modena, in Combined Business Management by the CUOA Foundation of Vicenza, in Business Management by the University of Genova, in Industrial Design by the Politecnico of Milano and in Physics of Materials by SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies) of Trieste.

On 2015 he has been inducted in the Automotive Hall of Fame, the international most prestigious award of this sector, for his significant impact on the automotive industry.

He was nominated by “Financial Times” as one of the fifty best managers in the world and “European Manager of the Year” for 2012 by the European Business Press Federation (EBP), an association of Europe’s leading economic and finance publications.

He is a Cavaliere del Lavoro and in 2008 the President of the French Republic awarded him the title of Commandeur de a Légion d’Honneur
