Palazzo Vecchio, Salone dei Cinquecento Piazza della Signoria, Firenze

Palazzo Vecchio is one of the most well-known town halls in Italy. It hosts artworks by Bronzino, Ghirlandaio, Vasari, Michelangelo and Donatello. Built at the end of the XIII century, it was the seat of Signoria – Florence city council.

Palazzo Vecchio owns the Salone dei Cinquecento, one of the largest chambers in Italy, which was carried out on commission of Girolamo Savonarola, who wanted it as the seat of the Consiglio maggiore (Main Council), made up of precisely 500 members.

Cosimo I de’ Medici summoned the greatest artists of the Renaissance, Michelangelo e Leonardo, who “fought an artistic duel” to paint frescos on the walls of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A mystery enshrouds the famous work by Leonardo “La Battaglia di Anghiari”, which is believed to be concealed behind a more recent fresco by Vasari. At present research is in progress: the results will be published in January 2012.

The Salone dei Cinquecento will host Milano Fashion Global Summit 2011.
